Everton’s lack of squad depth was glaringly obvious as they fell to a heavy defeat here in midweek, with Mason Holgate, Tom Davies, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Michael Keane among those given an opportunity, but failed to impress.
The Toffees’ three main creative players have also been in woeful form all season too, as goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (one) has more assists this season than Anthony Gordon, Demarai Gray and Dwight McNeil combined (zero).
Gordon has been a player under the spotlight more so given the transfer speculation around him, and he has been way below par since the transfer window closed.
He was lucky not to be sent off on Tuesday as he picked up his seventh yellow card of the season already in just 14 appearances.
Gray has shown flashes of individual brilliance, like his goal in the cup this week proved, but regular inconsistency which has plagued his career up to this point is catching up with him again.
Being tasked with replacing Richarlison in the side was always a big ask given he is clearly a level below the outgoing Brazilian international, and that is weighing heavily on him.
It is not just in attack where they are struggling though, as a team unit, they are struggling to keep teams quiet.
No side has faced more shots in the Premier League than Lampard’s side, including an incredible 56 in their last three games in all competitions, versus Bournemouth, Leicester City and Fulham, three sides all on a similar level to them
That run of defeats also saw them record a Premier League first, becoming the only side ever to lose back-to-back games after leading by two goals in both, in matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United recently.
Everton are the perfect opponents for them to face again too, not just because of their struggles, but because they have never lost a Premier League home match against the Toffees in five encounters (won three, drawn two).
Their win over them in the cup on Tuesday will only further their belief that they can extend that run again.
Despite having the worst defensive record in the division, they now face a toothless Everton side without their starting striker, so O’Neil may be afforded the luxury of focusing preparation on the attacking side of their game.
With trips to Chelsea and Manchester United to come in quick succession after the World Cup break, a win for Bournemouth here would be vital and would see them leapfrog Everton to move further away from trouble – the perfect way to finish the first chunk of the season.
After knocking them out of the Carabao Cup in midweek, Bournemouth will be targeting a quick double over Everton when both teams meet in the Premier League on Saturday.
Although the Toffees are set to reinstate their key players, Bournemouth are still expected to maintain their recent dominance in this fixture.
Interim manager Gary O’Neil has earned plenty of praise for Bournemouth’s performances since the sacking of Scott Parker. However, they have lost their way in recent weeks, losing their last four Premier League matches.
Bournemouth suffered a 4-3 defeat at Leeds United in their previous Premier League fixture. They came from a goal down to lead thanks to efforts from Marcus Tavernier, Phillip Billing and Dominic Solanke but were ultimately let down by their poor defence.
The Cherries will be targeting a return to winning ways at the Vitality Stadium where they have beaten Aston Villa and Leicester City this season. They will also take plenty of confidence from the 4-1 victory over Everton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
Everton are still unable to find some consistency and head into Saturday’s clash with just one win from their last seven matches across all competitions. They have suffered five defeats in that run and are now just two points above the relegation zone.
The Toffees were beaten 2-0 at home by Leicester City in their previous Premier League fixture. It was a poor performance from Everton, who looked disjointed throughout and finished with only two attempts on target.
That poor performance was carried into their Carabao Cup fixture on Tuesday as they were lethargic throughout at Bournemouth. That 4-1 defeat was an extension of a poor record on the road for Frank Lampard’s men, who are winless in their last four away matches, suffering three defeats in that run.
How the bookies view it
The bookies are expecting a closely fought contest with a win for Bournemouth priced at 19/10 by SBK, who are also offering 18/11 for an Everton win. A draw is set at odds of 9/4 by bet365.
Recent head to head
Bournemouth have come out on top in recent fixtures against Everton, winning the last three meetings. The victories have been one-sided in that run as evidenced by the 4-1 win in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
Players to watch
Bournemouth have a number of attacking threats but Dominic Solanke could be worth keeping an eye on as he looks to add to his three goals this season. The striker was on target last time out at Leeds and is priced at 16/5 by William Hill to find the net on Saturday.
Everton are expected to reinstate some of their first team players who started on the bench in the Carabao Cup. Neil Maupay is likely to lead the line for the Toffees and could be backed to take advantage of Bournemouth’s dodgy backline.
Bournemouth have opened the scoring in the last three meetings with Everton and Saturday’s clash could be tipped to follow a similar pattern at 6/5 with bet365.

O’Neil made wholesale changes to his side in midweek, and many repaid the faith such as Jamal Lowe, Junior Stanislas and Emiliano Marcondes, who all found the net on a rare appearance.
Chris Mepham remained in the side for the cup fixture as he will be suspended in the league following his fifth yellow card of the season against Leeds.
With Lloyd Kelly also out injured, Marcos Senesi will likely be partnered with Jack Stephens in the centre of defence in Mepham’s absence.
Mark Travers will also continue in goal with Brazilian stopper Neto still out injured.
Lampard made 11 changes to his Everton side in midweek, and there is a real possibility he could make up to nine again here.
Gueye and Onana should return in midfield for Everton, despite the duo going off against Leicester last weekend and subsequently missing the cup tie in midweek.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s myriad of injury problems continue as he is expected to miss out again with a mixture of hamstring and shoulder injuries, so Neal Maupay will probably start up front.
Lampard may put Seamus Coleman back into the side after Nathan Patterson had a tough night thrown in at the deep end with a second-string Everton side on Tuesday.
