Wrexham have put together a sensational run of form recently, only losing one of their last fifteen outings in all competitions, leaving them second in the National League standings.
A 4-0 thrashing of Altrincham at the weekend ensured that the Dragons kept the pace with league-leaders Notts County, who also won 4-0 on home turf, defeating bottom-placed Torquay United.
In trademark style, Paul Mullin opened the scoring, netting after 31 minutes, before strike-partner Ollie Palmer also got in on the act, scoring a brace, with the fourth goal coming from James Jones with just over ten minutes to play.
As a result, Phil Parkinson‘s side are currently three points off first, and it is shaping up to be a battle between them and Notts County for the National League title, with Wrexham five points clear of third-placed Chesterfield and 10 clear of Solihull Moors, who occupy fourth.
The Dragons are the league’s top scorers, with 46 goals in just 16 games, and they also boast a formidable home record, winning every single league game that they have played at the Racecourse Ground this season, a statistic that will make grim reading for Maidenhead.
Indeed, the Magpies will be heading into the game as underdogs, as every side who goes to Wrexham does, but they will be given hope by an impressive 1-0 win against Bromley on Saturday, with Cole Kpekawa netting a late winner.
The result ended a two-game losing streak for Alan Devonshire‘s side, having lost 2-1 to Barnet and 2-0 to Solihull Moors in the week prior, with the result moving them up to 15th in the standings, six points clear of the relegation zone.
Winning closely-contested games has been key for Maidenhead, with five of their six league wins coming by one-goal margins, a good trait to have in a side where the main focus is likely to be maintaining their place in the National League.
Serving soldiers Sapper Billy Garrett and Sapper Chandeep Singh, along with veteran Sam Mitchell, who have all been based at Beeston, Nottingham, will walk on to the pitch ahead of kick-off to lay a wreath in the centre circle, with both sets of players gatherered around them.
Our head coach Luke Williams and Bromley’s manager Andy Woodman will also lay wreaths in their technical areas before a minute’s silence begins on the referee’s whistle. The Last Post will then be played by Paul Cuthbert from the Salvation Army brass band.
Several poppy sellers will be based around the ground and tonight’s matchday programme will feature a special remembrance cover
Connell Rawlinson got things going with an excellent finish from the edge of the area before Ruben Rodrigues sent us into the break 2-0 up from the penalty spot.
We continued our complete control after the break and added deserved gloss to the scoreline with a superb Quevin Castro strike and a deflected Geraldo Bajrami effort.
Richard Brindley’s dismissal in the midweek rout at Wealdstone meant he served a one-game suspension, forcing Luke Williams to make one change to his starting XI as Aden Baldwin slotted into the back three.
As expected, we immediately grabbed control of the game and had a good chance to open the scoring on seven minutes when Matt Palmer curled a delightful cross to the back post. Stooping to meet it, Adam Chicksen had two options – to either head the ball goalwards or back into the danger area. He seemed to get caught between two stools, though, and sent the ball over the angle of post and crossbar.
Torquay were playing with five at the back and were doing a decent job of stifling us until the 25th minute, when Macaulay Langstaff saw a shot parried and Cedwyn Scott slipped Aaron Nemane through on goal. Halstead stood firm to make a big save.
The visitors’ defence was breached shortly afterwards, though, with a typically well-worked free-kick not quite paying off, only for Rawlinson to receive the ball 20 yards out and pick out the bottom corner like an accomplished striker.
We were beginning to grind down the Gulls’ resolve and, sure enough, we had a second on 33 minutes when brilliant interplay between Rawlinson and Scott resulted in Nemane being felled in the area, with Rodrigues making no mistake from the spot.
It could have been three shortly before the break when, fresh from his two-goal midweek haul, Chicksen crashed a right-footed effort off the bar and the rebound looking destined for Langstaff to add to his incredible tally. Halstead did well to smother, though, and we had to settle for a two-goal cushion heading into half-time.
We soon set about extending our lead after the break, with Sam Slocombe getting a fraction too much on his long ball over the top for Langstaff who was unable to control.
And the forward’s frustrations continued as, after Palmer had kissed the side-netting with a shot, Langstaff fired a shot over before, shortly afterwards, seeing a shot blocked in the area.
Our first change came on 65 minutes when Sam Austin replaced Scott and, three minutes after his introduction, the former Kidderminster man rattled the bar with a well-struck shot from the edge of the box.
Another two changes followed, with Quevin Castro and Tobi Adebayo-Rowling coming on for Rodrigues and Nemane, and Langstaff had another sniff at goal on 80 minutes when Cameron’s cross took a nick off Castro on its way through to him, leaving him unable to bring the ball under control in the area.
Torquay responded with a Cameron Thompson shot that flew a yard wide of the post as the visitors offered an incredibly rare moment of threat.
But we put the game to bed on 88 minutes when Castro collected the ball, moved into the space in front of him and arrowed a shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Mercilessly, we then added a fourth as Bajrami’s well-struck effort was deflected into the bottom corner in the last minute of normal time.
And it could even have been five had Langstaff been able to control Castro’s perfectly-executed through ball, but his touch evaded him and we had to settle for 4-0.
STARTING XI: Slocombe; Cameron, Rawlinson, Baldwin; Chicksen, Nemane (Adebayo-Rowling 75′); Bajrami, Palmer, Rodrigues (Castro 76′), Scott (Austin 65′); Langstaff
