With six points from the last three Championship matches, West Brom’s new era under Carlos Corberan has started successfully after a torrid run of form at the beginning of this season which led to the exit of Steve Bruce from the managerial hot seat.

The ex-Huddersfield Town boss would have been fearing the worst after watching defensive frailties and toothlessness in attack from his new set of players during his first game in charge against Sheffield United, but back-to-back 1-0 wins against Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers have lifted the mood in the West Midlands.

Kyle Bartley‘s second-half header earned the Baggies maximum points against OPR last weekend, which represented a brilliant result on the road but also a key moment for the 31-year-old central defender who has faced more criticism than most during the opening half of this campaign.

The Black Country outfit have kept back-to-back clean sheets in the last two games for only the second time this season, with their tendency to concede first and early severely hindering their ability to collect maximum points from games they go on to dominate possession-wise.

With the World Cup break after this weekend’s home assignment versus Stoke, Corberan will have nearly a month to work with his new squad as they aim to distance themselves from what would be an embarrassing relegation scrap for a club with West Brom’s history and ambition.

The Baggies have won their last two games by 1-0 scorelines, beating Blackpool at home before earning an impressive triumph at high-flying QPR.

Stoke City sit five points above the Baggies in mid-table having played one more match than Carlos Corberán’s men.

They’ve won two of their last three games and secured three points at home to Luton Town on Tuesday night. Nick Powell and an own goal from Tom Lockyer earned the Potters a 2-0 victory at the bet365 Stadium.

Our opponents

Stoke City will arrive at The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon hoping to secure consecutive victories for the second time this campaign.

The Potters had a successful night on Tuesday in their most recent game, beating Luton Town 2-0 on home soil.

But inconsistency has been an issue for Alex Neil’s team so far this term, with Stoke winning four and losing four of their last eight fixtures.

Neil was appointed in August after leaving Sunderland, who he helped guide back into the second tier via the Sky Bet League One play-offs in the 2021/22 season.

The current campaign is Stoke’s fifth in the Sky Bet Championship following their relegation from the Premier League in 2018. Saturday’s visitors are yet to finish in the top half of the division since then, with the supporters desperate to see that change this time around.

From the Albion Archive

Albion sealed three Premier League points against Stoke City in dramatic circumstances in January 2016.

Stephane Sessegnon opened the scoring in the second-half but Jon Walters headed in an 81st-minute equaliser.

However, the Baggies weren’t to be denied a victory and won it late into stoppage time thanks to Jonny Evans’ effort.

One for the stattos

Albion will want to earn their 50th victory over the Potters in what will be the 150th meeting between the two teams this weekend.

The Baggies have won 49, lost 63 and drawn 37 of their previous 149 games against Stoke City.
