After a run of just one win from seven matches, Sunderland have recently dropped out of immediate contention for the playoffs, something which would have naturally concerned Tony Mowbray.

However, Sunderland have since responded by collecting four points on their travels against Luton Town and Huddersfield Town, results which can kick-start their campaign ahead of the break for the World Cup.

In sharp contrast to conceding four second-half goals against Burnley, the Black Cats have responded with two strong showings after the break, particularly at Luton as they came from behind to earn a share of the spoils.

Sunderland and Mowbray have undoubtedly been hindered by injuries to key forwards, yet they have only failed to net in one of their last six outings.

The return of Ellis Simms is a notable boost for Sunderland, as is Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo netting twice in his last three appearances after an indifferent start to his spell at the Stadium of Light.

Hosts Sunderland take on rivals Cardiff City in Saturday’s Championship clash at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland will be hoping to bounce back from the final result in a 0-2 win over Huddersfield Town. In this game, Sunderland had 54% possession and had nine shots and three set-pieces. Scorers for Sunderland: Alex Pritchard (55′) and Amad Diallo (96′). Huddersfield Town made 16 attempts and scored 3 tries.

It has been rare in recent games for Sunderland to keep a clean sheet. In fact, Sunderland have failed to keep a clean sheet in 5 of their previous six games and have conceded 10 away goals. This pattern may not continue in this game. Sunderland have drawn their last two league games against Cardiff City in this fixture.

After beating Watford in the last game of the Championship Race, Cardiff City will be hoping to turn the tide here. In this match, Cardiff City have 52% possession of the ball and have attempted 11 goals, including three. Cedric Kipre (9′) was the only player to score for Cardiff City. Watford attempted 16 shots, of which 5 were successful.

Francisco Sieralta (38′) and Ismaila Sar (59′) score for Watford. Looking at their form, they have scored in 5 of their last 6 matches against Cardiff City and their opponents have scored a total of 9 goals. Defensively, “Cardiff City” showed weakness. In this match, Cardiff City have drawn their last two away matches.

A Rotherham outfit fresh off heartbreak in midweek will act as hosts this weekend, in a Championship matchup at the New York Stadium.

This comes as the Millers prepare to face off with a Norwich City side still searching for a consistent run of form.

First, let’s take a look at the recent efforts of the former.

Rotherham are currently in the midst of a concerning stretch of results, which has seen them secure just a solitary point from an available twelve.

This came courtesy of a 2-2 stalemate at Coventry two weeks ago, a result which has since been followed by a pair of successive defeats.

The most recent came this past Wednesday, when a trip to table-topping Burnley saw Matt Taylor’s men put to the sword by three goals to two.

The final scoreline in and of itself, though, did not tell the true story.

As proceedings at Turf Moor rolled into injury time, it was actually Rotherham who looked set to clinch all three points, leading by two goals to one courtesy of strikes from Ben Wiles and Chiedozie Ogbene.

The most remarkable of turnarounds, however, saw Burnley go on to hit back not once, but twice, the 2nd of which came a full ten minutes into time added on, to ultimately condemn the Millers to defeat.

Taylor and co, as a result, have slipped to 14th in the Championship table, now just three points clear of the bottom-three.

Safe to say, then, that upcoming opponents Norwich will be confident in their chances of adding to Rotherham’s woes this weekend.

The Canaries, of course, have endured a hit-and-miss season of their own to date.

Widely viewed as being amongst the favourites for promotion ahead of things getting underway, a lengthy recent stretch of inconsistency has culminated in Dean Smith’s troops falling well off the pace of table-topping Burnley.

Norwich have, though, at least managed to put a stop to an alarming recent slide over the course of the last week.

After falling to four defeats from five between October 8th and 25th, the Canaries have since secured four points from an available six.

Last time out, a meeting with high-flying Queens Park Rangers at Carrow Road gave rise to a solid if unspectacular sharing of the spoils, courtesy of a hard-fought 0-0 stalemate.

And we at 101 are therefore backing Norwich to go one better next time out, to emerge from the New York Stadium with all three points at Rotherham’s expense.

Simms appears in line to earn a recall to the Sunderland attack after proving his fitness during two substitute appearances.

Although Jack Clarke is expected to return to the starting lineup after his one-match ban, Alex Pritchard impressed in his place at Huddersfield.

Daniel Neil may also come back into contention for a start in midfield if Mowbray opts for fresh legs.

While Cardiff were competitive against Watford, Hudson may show preference for freshening up his side in midfield and the final third.

Romaine Sawyers and Sheyi Ojo are both pushing for recalls, and Kion Etete will hope to finally be given his first Championship start after nine substitute outings.

Sunderland possible starting lineup:
Patterson; O’Nien, Wright, Batth, Cirkin; Roberts, Evans, Embleton, Clarke; Diallo, Simms

Cardiff City possible starting lineup:
Allsop; Romeo, Ng, Kipre, Nkounkou; Rinomhota, Wintle, Ralls; Philogene-Bidace, Etete, Ojo
